The Art of Live Guest Illustration at South African Weddings
Luxury wedding entertainment that captures memories in real time
If you have been to a wedding in South Africa in the last two years, you may have noticed a small crowd forming around an easel. Guests leaning in. Phones lifted. A quiet sense of awe as the blank paper begins to transform into a portrait. Someone always whispers, “She’s painting us… live.”
Jenna Hutchinson, founder of Wedding Painter SA, has painted thousands of guests across weddings in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and beyond. Her live guest illustrations are a form of luxury entertainment, performance art, and personal keepsake all in one.
Real Entertainment, Real Impact.
Jenna’s Story
Jenna’s story begins in the United Kingdom, where she worked as a police officer and painted commissions on the side. A trip to Mexico changed everything. After sharing her artwork with a host, she realised her potential to create live wedding illustrations professionally.
Within ten days she planned her business, sketched logos, and prepared for a new chapter. Two years later, she is one of South Africa’s most sought-after live wedding illustrators.
Why Live Illustration Captivates Guests
Live illustration is unlike any other wedding entertainment. Guests witness art in motion, seeing their own likeness appear on paper. The portraits are permanent keepsakes, not just a fleeting experience.
Perfect for couples searching for:
“Wedding entertainment South Africa”
“Johannesburg wedding entertainment”
“Cape Town wedding entertainment”
live illustration is a new, luxurious option that creates lasting memories.
The Style
Jenna’s signature style blends watercolour and fashion illustration, with soft washes of colour and expressive line work. She captures facial features in a way few South African artists do, giving guests a personal and editorial-quality portrait.
Her materials include premium watercolour paper, fine liner pens or Lamy fountain pen with waterproof ink, a jumbo HB pencil, and a custom-built easel. Each piece is crafted quickly but with care, reflecting the tone and energy of the wedding.
Luxury Wedding at The Saxon.
One of Jenna’s most memorable events took place at Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, Johannesburg. The couple booked her through a planner in Cape Town. While the couple kept to themselves, guests surrounded Jenna’s easel, filming, posing, and watching as their portraits came to life.
The Great Easel Collapse
At a large luxury barn venue, Jenna’s easel collapsed just minutes before guests arrived. Quick thinking, a borrowed table, and careful lighting turned disaster into an elegant seated painting setup, showing how adaptable she is under pressure.
Grandmother and Grandfather Portrait
At another wedding, a bride requested her late grandfather be included in her grandmother’s portrait. When the bride saw the finished piece, she cried tears of joy. Moments like this shows how Jenna’s work becomes emotional keepsakes, not just entertainment.
Cinematic Gallery Experience
Jenna’s setup is designed to be visually striking. Custom easels, portable lights, and collapsible metal gallery stands transform the space into an intimate art gallery. Guests naturally gather, creating an atmosphere of curiosity and engagement. Even when travelling by plane, she adapts her setup with stringed displays and lights to maintain elegance.
Why Jenna Stands Out
Unlike other wedding artists in South Africa, Jenna works independently, offers guest illustrations as her main service, and includes facial features in every portrait. She provides A4 watercolour paintings that are luxurious keepsakes and has experience working with both South African and international couples.
Her services appeal to couples looking for something unique, interactive, and meaningful, and she is consistently sought out by planners for Johannesburg wedding entertainment, Cape Town wedding painter, Pretoria wedding artist, and Durban wedding entertainment.
Professional luxury artist that knows weddings and events of all kinds.
Why Live Illustration is the Luxury Wedding Trend to Watch
Live illustration is memorable, personal, and lasting. Five years from now, guests may not remember the playlist or menu, but they will remember being painted by a real artist and leaving with a work of art to treasure. It is entertainment that also becomes a family heirloom.

I primarily work across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban. Travel up to 30 kilometers from Johannesburg is included in the standard price. For further locations, I provide a personalized travel arrangement covering flights and accommodation if needed. I don’t profit from travel, but this ensures I arrive fresh and ready to paint.
-
I usually arrive an hour before guests to set up and get comfortable in the space. The cocktail hour is ideal to start engaging guests, photographing them, and painting portraits. As the reception continues, I display completed artwork and move around to continue painting where possible. My setup is flexible and works both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.
-
I can paint up to 70 guests for larger packages. On average, each portrait takes about seven minutes, depending on outfit complexity. Smaller or more intimate weddings are also available, with packages tailored for cocktail-hour entertainment or partial guest coverage. I can paint up to 70 guests for larger packages. I need around two square meters of space for my custom easel and materials. Lighting is important, especially for evening weddings, but I bring my own portable easel light if required. The area should allow for guest interaction while keeping noise at a level where conversation is possible. I can adapt quickly for weather or venue constraints.

Bookings can be made up to the end of 2027, with a waiting list for 2028. After enquiring, I send a personalised package with a quotation. To secure the date, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required, followed by a signed agreement. The remaining payment is made one month before the wedding alongside a final consultation with the venue coordinator.

Yes, I can include late family members, pets, custom colours, or prioritise certain guests. All special requests are managed discreetly and coordinated with the couple to ensure no one feels left out.
